How to keep your tomatoes fresher for longer

Tomatoes are one of the most versatile and popular ingredients in the kitchen. Whether sliced in a refreshing salad, simmered into a rich pasta sauce, or simply enjoyed on their own, the flavour and nutritional value of tomatoes are undeniable. However, their delicate nature can make them prone to spoilage if not stored properly. Let us explore some simple yet effective tips on how to keep your tomatoes fresh for an extended period.

1. Selecting the right tomatoes

The first step in ensuring prolonged freshness is to start with high-quality tomatoes. Look for ones that are plump, firm, and vibrant in colour. Avoid tomatoes with soft spots, bruises, or wrinkled skin, as these are likely to spoil faster.

2. Room temperature or refrigeration?

The decision to store tomatoes at room temperature or in the refrigerator depends on their ripeness. If your tomatoes are unripe or just beginning to ripen, it’s best to keep them at room temperature. Placing unripe tomatoes in the refrigerator can alter their texture and diminish their flavour. However, once tomatoes are fully ripe, storing them in the refrigerator can help extend their shelf life.

3. Proper storage in the refrigerator

When storing ripe tomatoes in the refrigerator, place them in a paper bag or a shallow container, rather than directly on the fridge shelf. This prevents condensation and exposure to other ethylene-producing fruits, which can hasten ripening and spoilage.

4. Separate tomatoes from other produce

Tomatoes emit ethylene gas, which can speed up the ripening process of nearby fruits and vegetables. To prevent premature spoilage, keep tomatoes away from other produce items.
