From MasterChef to disaster chef, Cape Town business owner, Shawn Godfrey, recently prepared some gourmet treats for City of Cape Town staff who were addressing public safety concerns during the eight-day, taxi stayaway.

‘During the height of the taxi protest and the public violence, staff were hard at work,’ said mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith. ‘Many a long day and even longer nights were endured by staff in the Joint Operations Centre and this was picked up by many following online.’

‘We were then approached by the winner of MasterChef 2022, who said he wanted to surprise the staff with a little treat.’

After claiming the coveted title last year, the Gqeberha native, an engineer by profession, launched his new company, The Roasted Dad.

The 2022 winner of the highly acclaimed cooking competition said that he had approached the city in an effort to give back to the staff who had dedicated long hours to keeping the city safe and protecting its residents.

‘I realised how important my city is and how necessary it is to protect local business,’ Godfrey explained. ‘I then reached out to the mayor to find out how we could assist.’

‘Food is my love and my passion. It’s how I give back so I offered to come and cook at the disaster centre.’

Staff were treated to gourmet boeries with atchar, some dry onions, topped with a smokey mayo.

‘We really appreciate the kind gesture,’ added Hill-Lewis, thanking the chef.
