Situated in the heart of the Boland, surrounded by mountains, lush greenery and several wine-producing farms, lies Worcester, a town rich in heritage and culture. The setting offers the ideal spot to enjoy some local food, wine and music during some of the town’s locally hosted markets.
Here are four of some of Worcester’s upcoming markets.
Worcester Huismark
The Worcester Huismark was started in November 2022 by local entrepreneurs Patricia le Roux and Anru Swanepoel as a means to create an affordable, accessible market for local exhibitors. Held in Le Roux’s own backyard, the market only features handmade and locally crafted items, including gifts, arts, crafts, decor and food. More than 20 exhibitors will be participating in the upcoming market, which will be themed for Easter.

Nell’s Place
The Nell’s Place market forms part of Nell’s Place – a mini shopping centre owned by Sunel Strydom in Worcester. The centre features Strydom’s nursery, a bookshop, art shop and gallery, a handmade clothes shop, two beauty salons and a tea garden. Apart from her husband and 12-year-old son (who runs the bookstore), all the shops are owned by women. The market has its origins in Strydom’s love for plants, coffee, books and art, and so the first market opened its stalls in January this year. Nell’s Place holds a night market on the first Friday of each month, as well a market during the day on the third and last Saturday of the month.

The profit made from the sale of products at the NID Market goes to the benefit of the deaf and persons with hearing loss at the National Institute of the Deaf in Worcester. The market coincided with the opening of the NID’s secondhand shop, Fabulous Finds, in 2020, offering about 25 local exhibitors the chance to showcase their wares and support the institute simultaneously.

Pure Boland
The Pure Boland Market started operating in 2009 as a joint project between Tharina Jonker and Berna Coetzee, a local photographer. The aim of the market is to support local entrepreneurs and provide them with a platform to sell their products. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pure Boland sold items via an online market, ensuring its longevity. The market also hosts several pop-up markets around the area, while the main event is held on the first Saturday of each month. In the meantime, Pure Boland is also in the process of creating a more permanent online shop, which will feature dry goods and handmade items. These will be delivered across the country.
