The 10th of February is World Pulses Day!
This year’s theme is “Pulses for a Sustainable Future” and it’s all about understanding the positive impact that pulses – think beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas – have on the creation of resilient farming systems and improving lives around the world.
The benefits of farming pulses include:
- A low water footprint
- Tolerance to droughts
- Resistance to climate-related disasters
- Improving soil biodiversity
Not to mention their affordable and nutrient-dense nature that makes pulses so accessible. Pulses contribute to food security and give people access to nutritious, healthy diets thanks to their high protein and fibre content, the micronutrients they provide, and their low fat content.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the production and consumption of pulses, as including pulses in agrifood systems is one of the ways that will help us reach the Sustainable Development Goals.
