Conscious eating starts with going green at the grocery store and, although there are many ways to do your bit, going plastic free is one approach that has taken the globe by storm. Currently one of the most trending searches on the Net, going #PlasticFree is at the forefront of a worldwide shift in becoming more mindful towards one’s impact on the planet. Here, we share a few tips on how you can lighten your load, aiding you in this journey to becoming an eco-warrior.

CONVENIENCE IS (NOT ALWAYS) KEY
It’s sad to say, but some retailers stock fruit like oranges and bananas that are peeled, then packaged in plastic containers. Although very convenient for on-the-go snacking, these containers only add to our plastic problem. Rather buy fresh fruit – Mother Nature has already packaged them for you – and use the peels to add to your compost heap. It’s a win-win!

TIPPING THE SCALES
Ditch the plastic and weigh your fresh fruit and veg straight from the heap! Simply ask the shop attendant to place the barcode sticker on the produce. Buying more than one of the same produce? Get yourself a reusable bag to put them in. We especially love these reusable produce bags by Living Eco.

A GREENER LUNCH (FOR WHEN YOU’RE IN A RUSH)
Popping into the shops for a quick bite? Instead of grabbing a plastic fork and knife at the store, rather invest in a set of reusable bamboo utensils. You’ll be saving the planet one bite at a time! The same goes for your morning cuppa – a travel mug or reusable coffee cup will go a long way in the fight against plastic. Have a bit of spare time after dinner? Prep your lunch for the next day and take it to work in a reusable glass container. We love making these layered cobb salad jars – the flavours will develop overnight for a sensational lunch.

BULK UP
Buying in bulk will not only save you a penny, it will also save you on plastic! Buying grains, legumes, pasta and cereals in bulk will spare you a few trips to the store, cutting your need for single-use plastic down exponentially. Store your bulk goods in reusable glass containers – they’re airtight (which will keep your precious cargo fresher for longer), good for the environment and oh-so pretty!
