4 simple ways to use a roll of puff pastry, sweet and savoury style

At one stage or another, you’ll find yourself with a roll of frozen puff pastry, unsure what you should do with it. It could be leftover from a batch of homemade pies, or perhaps you just impulse-bought it (like me) and it hasn’t left the freezer since. Either way, here are four simple ways to use a roll of puff pastry sweet and savoury style, with help from TikTok:

These are simple, delicious and look gorgeous once they’re served up. Get creative with the fillings too. For the sweet tooth, fill with vanilla custard, or whipped cream and top with a medley of your favourite fresh fruit – berries and strawberries always look great. Dust with icing sugar for that finishing touch.

For a savoury spin, fill with herb or chive-flavoured cream cheese and top with thin slices of onion and tomato, or whatever you fancy. Add a dash of pesto (I love Pesto Princess’ Basil Pesto, but you can also make your own) or fresh herbs. Voila!

These are devilishly delicious and so simple to make! Cut up your puff pastry into rectangles, egg wash and bake in the oven (usually, your roll of pastry will tell you how long the dough goes for).

While that’s busy, dice up some strawberries and fold into store-bought or homemade whipped cream. Once your puff pastries are ready, let cool and cut in half. Smear or pipe strawberry jam, jelly or compote onto half of the pastries, and pipe on whipped cream mixture (or smear if you don’t have the patience for piping) on the other half, and join halves together. Top it off with a dust of icing sugar, and boom! Bob’s your uncle.

These will wow the crowd. Whip half a cup of salted butter with half a cup of brown sugar and a quarter cup of cinnamon. Once it’s combined into a paste, spread over the length of one roll of puff pastry and top with another roll of pastry (like a sandwich). Make sure all the sides are sealed in, then using a pizza cutter or knife, cut 2.5 cm strips along the short end of the puff pastry.

With the individual strips, proceed to fold them over themselves (as pictured in the video) and stick them onto skewers to secure the pastries. Bake for 20 minutes at 180.

Then, in a mixing bowl add 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 2 tablespoons of butter and 1/4 cup of cream. Mix together until thick. Once the pastries are out of the oven and have cooled, dip one side of the pastry into the cream mixture, and there you have it!

Pro tip: add 1/2 cup of cream cheese and a drizzle of lemon juice to your cream mixture if you like a hint of tang! Mix until thick.

The three things life evolves around? Cheese, butter and garlic. To make these little batons of life, press handfuls of cheese into your roll of puff pastry, then fold and roll with a baking pin. Divide the dough into strips and then twist each one of them and bake until golden brown. As soon as the pastry comes out of the oven, brush with a mixture of garlic and butter or store bought garlic butter. Consume immediately!
