The long month of August finally came to an end, signaling the arrival of spring! As the rest of the world celebrates September as the first month of spring, South Africa also celebrates its heritage. During the annual Heritage Month, aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and intangible are recognised and celebrated. This includes creative expression such as music and performances, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the popular memory, according to the South African Government’s website

Spicy Chakalaka

To kick off Food&Home’s Heritage Celebrations, we are sharing this recipe for Spicy Chakalaka, a typical South African dish made with baked beans, peppers, onion, and tomato. Chakalaka is best enjoyed as a relish and goes with just about anything. From pap, samp, stews, and bread to meat and “boerewors rolls”.
